Religion is very important for Armenians. After the disintegration of the Soviet-Union, churches and monasteries were rebuilt and the old traditions came back completely. Around 94% of the population is Christian and belongs to the Armenian Apostolic Church. Other religions in Armenia include Protestants, Roman Catholics, followers of the Russian Orthodox Church and a small group of Muslims.

Armenia was the first country that accepted Christianity as the state religion, this happened in 310 AD. In subsequent years, the Armenian Apostolic Church was developed. The city of Echmiadzin, about 20 kilometers from the capital Yerevan, is the center of the Armenian Apostolic Church. At the churches and monasteries you will find typical Armenian stone crosses, called kachkars. The Armenians also incorporate the lighting of candles in church.
