Essen und Getränke in Israel

Israeli and Palestinian cuisine is a delicious mix of Mediterranean, Arabic, Turkish, Persian and Jewish foods. For vegetarians the Israeli kitchen is like mecca. Olives, chickpeas and yoghurt are widely used. Most restaurants serve kosher food. That means that the food is prepared according to Jewish dietary laws. For example no pork and no shellfish. For a quick lunch there is pita. This is flat bread that is eaten with houmous, a chickpea puree cooked with olive oil and herbs. A shawarma is a pita stuffed with lamb or beef. Mahashi are popular Palestinian dishes: stuffed vegetables (aubergines and courgettes), and stuffed grape leaves and cabbage leaves.

Besides a variety of soft drinks and other juices there are plenty of fruit juices available. Israeli wine has a very good reputation. In particular, the wines from the Golan Heights are renowned. As regards beer you can choose from good home brew (Goldstar, Maccabee) and the well-known foreign brands (Tuborg, Carlsberg, and Heineken). In the West Bank, the locally brewed Taybeh beer and wine from Bethlehem are recommended.
