Israel is a narrow, elongated country from west to east and has four different landscapes. The coastal plain in the west is the first one. The coastal plain has a length of 200 km and an average width of 20 km. This area consists of a long chain of cities, agricultural settlements and resorts. Further east lays the western highlands stretching from north to south over a length of 300 km. To the east of the western highlands lies the Jordan Rift Valley, a fracture in the earth stretching from northern Syria to Mozambique. In this area you will find the Sea of Galilee, the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea and the Gulf of Eilat as well. To the south lies the Negev desert that covers two-thirds of the area of Israel.
